Against the Gods: The Remarkable Story of Risk Review

A great book and highly recommended. Peter starts with the history of evolution of numbers and how the probability concept was born, almost thousand years ago. He goes on to explore the assumptions in risk management models and how historical data can be very dangerous to predict the future course of markets. Good coverage on diversification concept by Markowitz and how behavorial finance challenges that view.

One of the first questions that one comes across in Against the Gods is how to divide the stakes of an unfinished game of chance between two players when one of them is ahead.

This question gave rise to probability, which later developed in risk management.

Some of the concepts Peter cover in his book are normal distribution, bell curve, rationality, behavioral finance. He asks one question again and again; how much past data is useful in predicting the future? He goes on to say that risk management is valid if we believe that future is in our hands.

Peter attacks the common phrase we use in our lives â on the averageâ. If we put head of a man in oven and feet in refrigerator, is the person on average normal?

Then Peter goes to normal distribution and explains why it is the core of all risk management systems and insurance businesses. He explains that for stock prices to be in random as believed by many, changes in stock prices must form normal distribution and the fact is although changes in stock prices are normal but problems occur at the extremes (normal curve would not have untidy bulges). Fortunes are created and destroyed at the extremes; more often destroyed!
Regression is another concept discussed in detail; good time are followed by bad times and vice versa. They say that in the long run prices will move towards mean. But what is the long run?

He explains that reducing uncertainty is a costly business and the number of risks that can be insured against is far smaller than the number of risks we take in the course of a lifetime.

Peter now moves on to the development of behavioral finance, which says that answer depends on the way question is asked. When the question is asked about profits, we are risk-averse and when the question is about losses, we are risk-seekers. This behavior is against the assumption that investors are rational.

Bottom-line is that rational behavior can be quantified whereas so-called anomalous behavior can not be quantified and hence markets which are based on anomalous behavior can never be predicted and can never be modeled.

Against the Gods: The Remarkable Story of Risk Specifications

With the stock market breaking records almost daily, leaving longtime market analysts shaking their heads and revising their forecasts, a study of the concept of risk seems quite timely. Peter Bernstein has written a comprehensive history of man's efforts to understand risk and probability, beginning with early gamblers in ancient Greece, continuing through the 17th-century French mathematicians Pascal and Fermat and up to modern chaos theory. Along the way he demonstrates that understanding risk underlies everything from game theory to bridge-building to winemaking.

excellent, but out of fashion - CaRaPr -
Very readable book. I would highly recommend it to anyone who has ever had an interest in statistics. However, arguments regarding derivatives and how they spread the risk efficiently are out of fashion.

The best general book I have read on the subject - Robert Muirhead - Melbourne, Australia
From the most ancient times human beings have sought glimpses of the future through oracles, divinations and signs in the natural world. Such practices are still widely followed today in many parts of the world.

But there has also been a search for more rational ways to understand the future and to predict the outcomes of uncertain events.

Against the Gods covers the major milestones in humanity's understanding of risk and probability. Bernstein covers the impact of Arabic numerals and the "discovery" of zero in mathematics. Without these two intellectual advances any quantitative examination of risk would have been impossible. Gambling provided an early impetus to the study of probability, as players sought to gain an edge over their opponents.

All the key player are described - Pascal, the remarkable Bernoulli family, Leibnitz, Bayes, Keynes, Markowitz, Arrow, Gauss, Galton, von Neumann, Black, Scholes to name just some of the people who appear in this book.

Subjects include probability, sampling, regression to the mean, the law of large numbers, game theory and the new field of behavioural economics.

Not all of the concepts are easy or intuitive to follow, but Bernstein does an excellent job of making them as accessible as possible without dumbing down the text.

The book does not cover the impact of uncertainty in physics, where it is an integral part of quantum mechanics, for example. Bernstein's book is purely about finance and investment decision making.

In Greek mythology, the Gods often rebuked uppity humans who became too full of hubris. In a similar way, our search to understand and reduce investment risk has also involved some humbling stumbles.

Portfolio insurance was found to be wanting in the market crash of 1987. CDOs and other derivatives to re-package risk failed spectacularly in the current global financial crisis.

Risk management tools only work in orderly, smoothly trending markets where there are always buyers and sellers. But it is precisely in disorderly markets where we most want such tools to work.

These failures will not stop the search for better ways to understand and control risk.

Brilliant - Amin -
Did you ever wonder about the people whose names are sprinkled in the statistical books used for courses in the universities. Why did they come up with such formulae, what was their motivation, and their objective. Well now Against the Gods attempts to open up secrets about these individuals.

Beautiful Joe (Webster's English Thesaurus Edition) Review

I really didn't know what to expect with this book. It was
originally written for children but I doubt if today's kids
could take it. But then, what do I know? I don't have children,
just a dog of my own.

Although the book was published more than a century ago,
sadly the story of animal abuse has continued.

On a lighter note, Joe the rescued dog narrates the entire
book with a great sense of humor. He cleverly introduces his
ethics, his opinions, and the importance of loyalty. I'd say
that's greater than great for any canine or those of two legged variety.

Beautiful Joe is a true classic, a delicious slice of history
that I would heartily recommend.

She Came From Heaven

Love it and I haven't even finished reading yet! - jlambert -
I purchased "Beautiful Joe" during a search for low cost kindle editions. I am a huge animal lover, dogs especially and I find myself relating so much to Miss Laura who has such a tender heart to all creatures. I never heard of this book as a child, but what a wonderful story. I am trying to savor the last parts of the book I have to read because I do not want it to end.

Beautiful story! - Patty Ellsworth - Marlow, OK United States
We got this book for my 13 year old daughter and she read it in two days!! Loved the story! It is really well written and told from Joe's point of view. Teaches you so much about animals!

Lots of typos in this version... - R. A. Olsen - Klamath Falls, OR USA
I ordered this book because it was quite a bit less than the other versions available. I wish I had looked at the preview and read the "disclaimer" on the first page. This is basically an unedited scan of the book, so the text is full of typographical errors (problems with text recognition and punctuation). I have not yet read the entire book, but in looking at the first few pages, I can already tell that it will be irritating to read this version. It will be similar to reading email from people that use no punctuation, capitalization, or spell-checking. I just hope that it does not detract too much from the story, which I am sure is good. If I find that reading this version gets to be too challenging, I will purchase another (regular) copy.

Up from Slavery (Oxford World's Classics) Review

A fascinating read about the life and times of Booker T. Washington and his march from slavery to one of the foremost men of his time.

His views may seem quite antiquated in today's world, given what has happened and not happened in the last 100 years in race relations and it is easy to see how Black leaders of today might be critical of Washington's views and perspectives.

But to do so would be to make the all too common mistake of imprinting and transferring today's value system and experiences on a culture and time of long ago. Anyone can look back with 20-20 hindsight and criticize. What matters most is having a plan to move forward from where you are, and Booker T. Washington certainly had that. His is a remarkable story of courage, grace, and iron-willed determination, for himself and for his race.

While today's leaders and purists might criticize Washington, it should never be forgotten that he took the first steps and led his race and the entire South in the first steps, no matter how imperfect they may be in hindsight, up and away from slavery.

There had to be a Booker T. Washington to bridge the gap between what was and what was to be. He knew his role and peformed it well.

Up from Slavery (Oxford World's Classics) Overview

For the 50 years that followed its publication in 1901, Up from Slavery was the most widely known book written by an African American. The life of Booker T. Washington embodied the legendary rise of an American self-made man, and his autobiography gave voice for the first time to a vast group that had to pull itself up from nothing. In the well-documented ordeals and observations of this humble and plainspoken schoolmaster we find traces of Washington's other nature: the ambitious and tough-minded analyst. Here was a man who had to balance the demands of his fellow blacks with the constraints imposed on him by whites.

Up from Slavery (Oxford World's Classics) Specifications

Nineteenth-century African American businessman, activist, and educator Booker Taliaferro Washington's Up from Slavery is one of the greatest American autobiographies ever written. Its mantras of black economic empowerment, land ownership, and self-help inspired generations of black leaders, including Marcus Garvey, Elijah Muhammad, Malcolm X, and Louis Farrakhan. In rags-to-riches fashion, Washington recounts his ascendance from early life as a mulatto slave in Virginia to a 34-year term as president of the influential, agriculturally based Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. From that position, Washington reigned as the most important leader of his people, with slogans like "cast down your buckets," which emphasized vocational merit rather than the academic and political excellence championed by his contemporary rival W.E.B. Du Bois. Though many considered him too accommodating to segregationists, Washington, as he said in his historic "Atlanta Compromise" speech of 1895, believed that "political agitation alone would not save [the Negro]," and that "property, industry, skill, intelligence, and character" would prove necessary to black Americans' success. The potency of his philosophies are alive today in the nationalist and conservative camps that compose the complex quilt of black American society.

Up From Slavery Booker T. Washington has been one of my all-time favorite American heroes -- ever since I first read about him in 4th grade. Washington had a gift for writing, and his autobiography, as well as his essays, are very easy to read, understand, and enjoy. The more I study and learn about him, the more impressed I am with his vision, his integrity, and his drive to improve his people and their lot in life.

Earth Abides Review

Every fan of post-apocalyptic stories has his own reason for following the genre. Mine is, that I like to see what the author considers most important to life in this world. When civilization and human society collapse; when food, medicine, and basic comforts become scarce; when friends are few and family is imperiled, what values will prevail? Most of the classic novels of calamity portray survivors determined to carry on, forming communities which are insular and self-reliant; learning and developing the skills and collecting the resources essential to living in a new world. Earth Abides paints a somewhat different picture.

Ish is much like the heroes of the other popular disaster stories, in that he is determined to carry on; and to recover, as much as possible, the advances of civilization which are in danger of disappearing with the loss of most of the human race. Ish finds himself the head of a community and extended family; and though he is strong, educated, and resourceful, he finds nothing but frustration in his efforts to pass on his values to the next generation. His children and grandchildren have little desire to produce goods for themselves, having become dependent on the things left behind by those who died from the plague. He is unable to inspire them with his vision for keeping the great accomplishments of humanity alive.

Something unique about this story is the occasional vignette describing what happens to the world around Ish, now that the human race has essentially become an endangered species. If you've ever watched the History Channel's "Life After People", you'll get a sense of that here - and see how these things directly affect Ish and the other survivors.

I'm discovering that those classic novels which I can read many times throughout my life, and which say something new to me each time (see my reviews of "1984" and "Fahrenheit 451"), are those in which I recognize the signs of true works of genius. This is only my first time reading "Earth Abides", but I already wonder what it will say to me in five years, or ten, as I raise my children, or lead kids in my community, and try to impart my own values and experience to them. Will I be able to pass on those things they need to survive, or will I find myself, like Ish, disappointed, or having to realign my expectations?

An engaging read, with all the hallmarks of a true classic.

EARTH ABIDES by George R. Stewart - Gandhi the Vile - Tulsa, OK
Earth Abides is a 1949 science fiction novel by George R. Stewart. When a plague all but wipes out the human race, a young introverted intellectual decides to observe the way the world responds to the sudden removal of humans, and, later, works to reconstruct certain aspects of civilization while battling to keep education alive.

This is a thoughtful book: one of Stewart's primary themes here is a philosophical take on civilization: its pros and cons, what is gained and lost through starting over, and whether parts or the whole are worth rebuilding. Stewart, with the world's last scholar as his main character, does a wonderful job with this.

But while Earth Abides is all about ideas, Stewart mostly punts on the moral and theological ramifications, as his characters move on quickly when these themes present challenges. In a world where people can't help but focus on death, that's a missed opportunity.

In addition to the book's philosophical emphasis, Stewart's post-apocalyptic world is generally free of unrest and violence. While this allows Stewart to focus on his themes of rebuilding, his characters are rarely in much peril, and there's never much suspense. Yet as Stewart charts the life of his protagonist through the years and decades, the reader becomes invested in and attached to the character, passive and powerless though he may be, and this is why the novel is compelling, and why the reader will not mind the book's many philosophical detours.

On the whole, Earth Abides is an intelligent, poignant and melancholy novel, and one of the finer and more influential works in the genre. Bonus points for an interracial relationship during a hostile era.

Earth definitely abides... - Anthony T. Leanza -
What an excellent book! I read this on Vacation in Cancun, and couldn't put it down. I may have missed a couple good vacation days totally engaged with this story. Well worth it.

OK, but not great - Kyle L. Rhynerson - Austin, TX
With so many books available to read, is this one worth your time? Ultimately, you'll have to make that decision, but I hope my review can help in some way.

There are some technology issues with the story that clearly show it was written in the late 1940's; however, these don't detract too much from the story.

There are also a few typos in the Kindle edition, which I assume is a scanning problem when converting to eBook format.

The two main issues I had with the book are:
1. Food - It is unrealistic to think that people would be subsisting off canned food for 20+ years, let alone, 40+ years at the end of the book.

2. Future generations - Without ruining the ending, the book makes a plot decision on how Ish decides to pass knowledge on to future generations. I liked two aspects of what he did, but I thought the rest was foolish.

I liked the book overall, but I didn't necessarily think it was a "great" work.

Great book - Evan 504 -
Earth Abides is a great book in general but among its genre its easily one of the best. If you enjoy post apocalypse fiction then this is a must read. No hesitation at a five star review.

Cooking for Isaiah: Gluten-Free & Dairy-Free Recipes for Easy Delicious Meals Review

Since going gluten-free last year I've been researching cookbooks that would expand my repertoire a bit. Like almost every cookbook I've come across, this one fits that bill. Since I also eat low carb and lower dairy (but not dairy-free) there are some recipes that don't thrill me--but there are enough that are absolutely excellent! A few of her ingredients will never be in my pantry (Marshmallow Fluff for the pancakes), but that's easy to substitute with something more appealing to me (like simmered blueberry sauce). The photos are visually stunning and helpful in getting an idea of an appealing final presentation. The recipes are clear and pretty uncomplicated, and there's just enough conversational introduction to each chapter to make you feel like you understand her motivation for writing it.

I'm always searching for good GF bread recipes, and I really liked the "Double Corn Bread;" I'm going to try the "Bread Slabs" next.

Really glad I got this book--definitely a great addition to my collection!

Not for everyone... - surfin' ma - Smalltown ID, USA
This book is inspiring and beautiful, containing many wonderful recipes for anyone who is not very sensitive to Gluten. It is also very grain heavy, something some of us who have Celiac and gone GF have had to eliminate from our diet's because of severe Cross Contamination problems. Many of the ingredients used in the recipes are hard to find in a non-contaminated state. Isaiah must not be a very sensitive Celiac, because Ms. Nardone's recipes would be almost 100% off limits to my 2 children with Celiac because of the ingredients in them. She makes eating GFCF sound
SO easy---just a simple switch in ingredients. But the truth is, it can be much harder due to cross contamination and ingredients not listed on labels.

Leadership: Theory and Practice Review

This is a well written textbook that I am using for a graduate course I teach called Leadership Perspectives and Practices. It is far superior to the book that I previously used in both format and style. Author Peter Northouse writes clearly and concisely in a book that provides a basic overview of all major leadership theories, as well as additional chapters on timely topics such as women and leadership, authentic leadership and culture and leadership.

Each chapter includes several short case studies that illustrate the principles covered, along with sections that point out the strengths and criticisms of each theoretical approach. The chapters are well sequenced and the book has an author index as well as a subject index.

I highly recommend this fifth edition of Leadership Theory and Practice for use as a text or for anyone who is seeking a book that provides a serious study of core leadership principles and their application.

Leadership: Theory and Practice Overview

Leadership Solutions

Leadership: Theory and Practice, Fifth Edition is the market-leading survey text for leadership courses across disciplines. Author Peter Northouse combines an academically robust account of major theories, approaches, models, and themes of leadership with an accessible style and numerous practical exercises to allow students to apply what they learn about leadership both to themselves and to specific contexts and situations. The book is divided into fifteen chapters, which cover all of the key aspects in the leadership field: defining leadership; trait approaches; skills approaches; style approaches; situational approach; contingency theory; path-goal theory; leader-member exchange theory; authentic leadership; transformational leadership; team leadership; psychodynamic approach; diversity and leadership; culture and leadership, and leadership ethics. Enhancing the academic coverage are new case examples, questions for reflection, and leadership instruments and questionnaires that promote a more interactive and enriching experience for students.

Great book - nilou -
I bought this book for one of my graduate courses, leadership theory. Every week I have to read two chapters of this book and I enjoy reading the book very much. The concepts are fluent and easy to follow. Each chapter introduces one leadership approach or theory and compare the strengths and criticisms of the theory. It also offers case studies and leadership instruments at the end of each chapter. Another great thing about this book is its easy language. English is my second language, but when I read this book I don't need to keep checking dictionary to understand the concepts. So, it makes my learning pleasant and save my reading time.

A fast delivery - Franc K. -
A timely delivery occurred for this book. In addition, the book was in excellent condition. When leadership embodies a set of skills, it becomes a process. Therefore, one can study and practice said process to become better at performing their job functions. The skills approach represents many of the minutiae and interrelated parts of leadership not found in other models. I am satisfied with the author's leadership theory found in this book.

No page numbers - billcosby -
This book is good on its own, but in the kindle version, there are no page numbers. For the casual reader this is fine, but do not buy this if you plan to use it for class. I bought it for class - specifically to write papers - and I cannot use it for that. I have no way to cite it. It is thoroughly and completely useless. And Expensive. For me, It was a waste of time and money.

Civil Procedure Examples & Explanations Review

This book takes the overwhelming and confusing topic of civil procedure and breaks it down into manageable material. Highly recommended for anyone taking civil procedure! This book helped me feel prepared, and I was able to get a B in the class!

Pros:
-Takes the complex material and breaks it down into digestable blocks. Glannon begins by explaining each key topic such as jurisdiction and venue, then he builds on these foundation blocks. He builds on these basic concepts by explaining the relation between them and delving into the more complex topics. It is necessary to understand these basic foundation blocks before you can build on with the more detailed and specific concepts.
-Examples provided in each section provide for proper understanding of each concept.

Cons:
-The questions provided in the book are very straight-forward and not extremely complex. They are helpful in getting a further understanding, but not likely the type of questions you will see on a law school exam.

Clear explanations, useful exercises and charts - Sarah Weinraub - Chicago, IL
This is by far the best civil procedure supplement sold. The book sheds ample light on one of the most confusing law school subjects. Glannon takes the reader through a number of hypothetical scenarios, often based on real cases, then tweaks each hypothetical slightly to help the student understand the subtle changes that affect the law.

If your exam is open-book, I would recommend flagging some charts out of this book - particularly the charts on judgment as a matter of law and summary judgment. These legal standards are difficult to grasp, and the charts provide a simple, concrete way to understand the boundaries of each.

Good book - great seller - S. Tercero - NYC
I purchased this book in preparation for my first semester of law school. Since I have yet to start the course my knowledge of the subject matter is limited. However, despite this setback it is obvious to me that the book is well-written and the examples solid. I am more than happy with my purchase.

The book is like new, there are few markings and I received it promptly. I will buy from this seller again!

Excellent for Exam Prep - Mr. Richard M. Klasen Jr. - Chicago, IL USA
This book does an excellent job of "dumbing down" difficult material, and the practice problems are excellent for exam preparation.

Barron's GRE: Graduate Record Examination Review

I took the GRE three years ago now and swear by Barron's GRE Review.

I studied for about an hour a day for 3 months...a little here and a little there mainly focusing on this book. I went through it twice, then rented a couple of others from the library. I found this book to be the most helpful of the books I studied and highly recommend it to anyone who is taking the GRE. The math section I highly recommend- it help to review all the math from middle school and high school that had long been moved out of my brain. With that being said, I can't say very much about the English. I was seeking a Master's degree in a math-oriented field so my main focus was on that. The English section did a good job on guiding through the essay along with lot's and lot's of vocab, which again I glanced but barely touched.

Again- great study aid!

Barron's GRE: Graduate Record Examination Overview

This 17th edition of Barron's GRE manual reflects recent Graduate Record Exams and presents six full-length model exams with all questions answered and explained. Tests are similar to recent actual GREs in length, question types, and degree of difficulty. The manual also reviews all GRE test topics: antonym, analogy, and sentence-completion questions, reading comprehension, analytical writing, quantitative comparison questions, data interpretation, and math. The enclosed CD-ROM contains computerized versions of the book's subject reviews and practice tests.

if getting overwhelmed is a good practice-strategy... - that guy (whatever that means) -
Barron's is undoubtedly the most rigorous general GRE guide. It is also, in my estimation, pretty excessive. The 3,500 word list is NOT necessary and is not very helpful. Sure, IF you could learn all 3,500 words, you'd hypothetically be in better shape than if you only knew 1,500 of them. Then again, there are only 30 verbal questions on the GRE. Also, you are NOT going to learn all 3,500 vocab words unless you already know most of them (and you probably don't, so it's just overwhelming). Likewise, the math section provides vague, confusing explanations of many answers, and contains many errors. If you can master the math in this book, you can master any math test rescued from a meat grinder originally written by a severely psychotic schizophrenic. Brilliant! But what about the GRE?
If you have spent your last several years intensely studying Victorian literature, ancient Latin and Greek languages, and college algebra/geometry, and you have a "gimme all you got!" attitude, then by all means, this is the way to go. If you're like the rest of us, you want straightforward training that will teach you what you need to know for the actual test (no more, no less), then look elsewhere. Please, look elsewhere. This book hurts my feelings.
Barron's essential words for the GRE is useful, thorough, and user-friendly. Princeton review is great for giving you the basic tools to do okay, and/or is a great introduction to studying for this wretched thing. Kaplan has a couple of nice, slim 'advanced' verbal and math books, which make a good supplement. Nova's GRE math prep course is also a good, thorough math book.
Don't take the GRE so seriously. The point is to score really well, not to be the ubermench of all topics distantly related to GRE success. Barron's general GRE book is an unforgiving slave-driver. Be good to yourself; use books that are more appropriate.

Excellent Condition - maggie -
Product was quickly shipped to me and in excellent condition. No used pages or written notes anywhere.

Poor Editing, Overall Mediocre Product - L. Lin -
Barron's 18th Edition for the GRE will likely help you prepare for the exam better than sitting at home watching paint dry or maybe reading Kaplan's version. This book is poorly edited, mistakes abound and are frustrating to the observant reader, and the format of the examples are not always intuitive. I have noticed errors in several sections, and it has irked me enough that I have stopped studying to write a scathing review. For example, the word definition for "colloquy" in their word list is "informal discussion," when it "informal" should be "formal." The only usage of colloquy in which it would be informal would be related to theological discussions. Another instance of frustrating mistakes is in some of their examples, they simply omit what the correct answer is. On one of their graphic interpretation practice questions, the question is reversed: instead of asking how much less, the question asks for how much more. Only in the answer section do you realize that the author/editor made an oversight, rather than your inability to answer the question.

I will mention again that this book will help you in your preparations for the GRE and possibly more so than Kaplan (in my opinion, which they simply have wrong answers). But that is like saying the urinal smells better than the toilet. However, these books are simply too poorly put together and little care was taken to refine these prep books. I only gave this book 2 stars (vs. 1 star), because I believe it to be marginally better than Kaplan in terms of quality. That is to say, Barron's GRE book is slightly less crappy. The other reason is its "Master Word List" which contains 3500 vocabulary words used commonly. This may be the one redeeming quality of this book, providing mostly accurate definitions with the words used in context on a large volume of vocab words.

Conclusion: This book is not good, but not as bad as comparable products out there. I have not tried Princeton Review products in detail, but they are generally more expensive with essentially the same content. One redeeming quality of Barron's is its word list. If you do purchase this book, buy it for this vocab list. Better yet, if your local library has a copy of these books, borrow it from there.

Update:
Took the GRE again, Verbal score went up 90 points, Quantitative score had no improvement.
