The Notebooks of Leonardo Da Vinci, Complete Review

Nothing of Leonardo DAVinci's sketchbooks were published until the 20th century. These are some of the most important documents of the Renaissance, and they did not become known until the 20th century. There are still people who do not know how important this work was. His anatomical studies were a watershed moment, because they introduced visual diagrams as the standard for communicating knowledge of the body and self. This was no more and no less than the conviction that the true knowledge of the shape of any body could only be arrived at by seeing it from different aspects. The truth of the body, the truth of the human being can only be discovered by looking at the body from multiple aspects, like; level, motion, perspective, transformation and growth. He opened up the body, it had always been closed, now its open. Now, what goes on inside the body is going to give us the essence of what it means to be human. It is the internal struggle, the self with the self, within .you. When you look at his sketchbooks, you see just one place where the whole world opens up.

What you have on Kindle are the notes from his sketch books.

Leonardo DAVinci invented the modern self. He invented the modern self precisely in this way, through the perspective of disappearance. What he tells reality and us about the self is that it only exists by that which is perceived by the eye. Reality is a product of nature; reality is that which we perceive by the eye. Reality is only that by which we can see. Moreover, in his notebooks he gives us another foundational belief about the human subject and its form. That the sound rules are the issue of sound experience and observation. Experience and observation can only be our best teacher. Of course, this is also, what Voltaire is telling us to by the way. The challenge comes when we realize that we are both to the subject observing and the object that is observed. In our search for self, we experience a kind of division between our constitutions as objects and our constitution as subjects. However, when we look at the human form, when we look at the self we find that the body is in harmony with nature, and that it is in harmony within nature. How does DA Vinci make these kinds of claims? Alternatively, how does he ground these kinds of claims with the function of the eye or the power of the eye? Well, one of the ways he does it is thru the camera obscura. Earliest record of use of camera obscura is in DA Vinci's writings. The camera obscura gave birth to the science of optics, the science of seeing. It is with DA Vinci, that the science of seeing became the foundation of self-representation, a representation called the self, thus the representation of the human form. Now DA Vinci embodied his own concept of the painter, as philosophers. He saw painters principally as natural philosophers. To him, nature was all important, absolute, the image of the eternal. In one very significant passage of his notebooks, he defines the relationship of art to nature and its process of evolution. "The painter will produce pictures of small merit, if he takes for his standard the pictures of others. If he will study from natural objects, he will bear good fruit, as was seen in the painters after the Romans always imitating each other until their art constantly declined from age to age. Therefore, this was paramount for him in some ways what he was doing, and thinking was very radical and revolutionary and in other ways, it was very traditional. He appears to be quite a traditionalist, he studied ancient sources, Greeks, medieval sources, he studied anatomy, and these traditions get him to compare the microcosm of the body and the macrocosm of the world. These analogies extend to everything that he attempted to trace, to record and to know about the human form. Comparisons between the arteries in the body and the underground rivers of the earth. The flow of blood to the head in relation to the circulation of water to the summits of mountains. How does blood get to your head? If you want to understand that then understand how water flows up to mountains. Blood when it bursts in the veins of your nose and water rushing out of a vein in the earth. Almost everything that occurs in the human body can be found in the natural world. His interest in these analogies becomes very evident in the notebooks and sketchbooks. Scholars argue that these microcosm and macrocosm analogies are more than outright comparisons that belong to a pre scientific age, they lead him to compare the study of the body and Ptolemy's study of the earth. Consequently to use Ptolemy's method in the geography as the starting point for his own systematic study of anatomy. Therefore, anatomy and geography here become one in DA Vinci's mind. The forms of the earth and those of the human body have a parallel. "Thus in 15 entire figures you will have set before you the microcosm on the same plan as was before me adapted by Ptolemy in his cosmology, and so I shall afterwards divide them into limbs as he divided the whole world into processes. Then, I will speak of the function of each part in every direction putting before your eyes a description of the whole form and substance of man as regards his movements from place to place by means of these different parts. Thus if it please our great author I may demonstrate the nature of men and their customs in a way I describe this figure." Therefore, within the human form and within the kind of intricate details of human anatomy he discovered a way of describing and recording, not only the geographical construction of the natural world, but of Divinity itself. And when you look more closely at the system he devised to study the body, the more carefully you look at his drawings of the human form the more clearly you begin to recognize how strikingly stunningly original it is.

Earlier authors had relied exclusively on verbal descriptions of the human body. The human body had been a verbal entity but he emphasis visual description and some of the illustrations he has to bring visual dimensions to the philosophy of Plato, Aristotle the descriptions put forward by these men he presents in visual terms in these kind of body scapes. In the course of 20 years, roughly from 1489 to the end of his life, he dissected about 19 corpses and became very much obsessed with dissection. He drew these parts of bodies in minute detail every part of the human anatomy, he would draw each piece separately, together and at different angles. He laid out bodies in his drawings to mime classical poses in painting. He is referencing the history of art with the poses and the visual representation of the human subject. It is presented to us that deeply challenge these values of human nature, of life and death of living form and the cadaver it really raises some profound questions. The problem is in order to get to those questions, in order to explore some of the deeper philosophical implications of his work you have to get past the gross factor and the moral and ethical questions that his work raises. He is an artist that works very consciously with the sense of the ethical lines that he is crossing; he is not an artist that wants to make you comfortable. He sees that blood gets in the way of his observations, so he advises that you make a model of the body part and then you draw it. Model making and scientific art go hand in hand for him. You have to reconstruct reality before you can represent it. Therefore, before you can draw what is real you have to make it yourself. One of the most striking features of the notebooks is the manner in which he presents his work to us. There are no criticisms of the shortcomings that he has discovered in earlier authors, he does not boast about his own accomplishments, his writing style is pedagogical, and he is writing a teaching manual with descriptions and advice. Therefore, if you want to draw a lung, here is how you should do it. What he is trying to do is to convey to a larger audience this method of presentation and by representing human form, he relies on diagrams, and his reliance apparently causes some serious problems for the printing presses of the day. It also caused real issues for publishers because of the graphic nature of the work.

This was very important for medicine. He shows us we can separate human emotions and passions from the human body in understanding human form, and what it means to be human. There is a purely clinical dimension and this other dimension of feelings and emotions, and they do not have to come together at all, this is radical.

Thus again, this inside outside, you see it everywhere in his work. Why are we fascinated with the painting of the Mona Lisa? Because of the question we always ask, what is going on inside? The study of the Mona Lisa, it seems to me has always been organized around precisely the question that drove DA Vinci in his research. All his sketches in this obsessive and fanatical devotion to drawing every part of the body in relationship to every other part of the body at multiple levels and multiple perspectives and in motion, outside inside. There is the outside, what is going on inside, isn't that why we are obsessed with this? This painting just demands that we try to find out what is going on underneath. The truth is underneath, behind her smile, something she is keeping from us. Yet she is revealing just enough of it to make us have to find out what is going on inside of her. It is that relationship once again between the inside and the outside.

I read this book for a graduate class in the Humanities. Recommended reading for anyone interested in history, psychology, philosophy, art, and science.

The Notebooks of Leonardo Da Vinci, Complete Overview

PREFACE A singular fatality has ruled the destiny of nearly all the most famous of Leonardo da Vinci's works. Two of the three most important were never completed, obstacles having arisen during his life-time, which obliged him to leave them unfinished; namely the Sforza Monument and the Wall-painting of the Battle of Anghiari, while the third--the picture of the Last Supper at Milan--has suffered irremediable injury from decay and the repeated restorations to which it was recklessly subjected during the XVIIth and XVIIIth centuries. Nevertheless, no other picture of the Renaissance has become so wellknown and popular through copies of every description. Vasari says, and rightly, in his Life of Leonardo, "that he laboured much more by his word than in fact or by deed", and the biographer evidently had in his mind the numerous works in Manuscript which have been preserved to this day. To us, now, it seems almost inexplicable that these valuable and interesting original texts should...

Check the Publisher carefully before you buy the printed version of "The Notebooks...." - Kiwi - Mississauga, Ontario Canada
Amazon associates reviews of a book with different versions of the same book from different publishers. Unfortunately for us customers, Amazon is seeing a growing plague of new Print-On-Demand Publishers who are specialising in reprinting copyright-expired books. Such as "The Notebooks of Leonardo Da Vinci." Some of these publishers produce quite good quality books, some do not.

A classic example of the "not good quality" is the imprint of "The Notebooks of Leonardo Da Vinci" published by General Books LLC.

The version published by General Books LLC is scanned in using OCR technology (and using pretty poor quality OCR scanning equipment and software from the look of their books), is overall of very poor print quality, automated reproduction with no index, no illustrations and an excessive number of typos. Also, there's no illustrations (which are pretty fundamental to any book on or by Leonardo Da Vinci)

To quote a few specifics from the publishers web site:
"We created your book using OCR software that includes an automated spell check. Our OCR software is 99 percent accurate if the book is in good condition. However, with up to 3,500 characters per page, even one percent can be an annoying number of typos....

After we re-typeset and designed your book, the page numbers change so the old index and table of contents no longer work. Therefore, we usually remove them. Since many of our books only sell a couple of copies, manually creating a new index and table of contents could add more than a hundred dollars to the cover price....

Our OCR software can't distinguish between an illustration and a smudge or library stamp so it ignores everything except type. We would really like to manually scan and add the illustrations. But many of our books only sell a couple of copies....

We created your book using a robot who turned and photographed each page. Our robot is 99 percent accurate. But sometimes two pages stick together. And sometimes a page may even be missing from our copy of the book. We would really like to manually scan each page and buy multiple copies of each original. But many of our books only sell a couple of copies....."

General Books LLC are flooding Amazon with these low quality publications (450,000+ listed under General Books LLC) and, unfortunately, many of them have the reviews associated with the original or with better quality imprints associated with them. The product description is totally misleading for the buyer that's not aware of this publisher. IMHO this is unethical marketing.

A general rule of thumb for these Print on Demand publishers is to take a look at the cover - if it's a good quality illustration that reflects the content, there's a table of contents, and when you do the Look Inside thing there's no disclaimer saying you're looking at another book, and they've used facsimile reproduction technology (rather than OCR), it's usually a pretty safe bet. Conversely, if any of these are missing, you're taking a chance on the quality. I've bought a few based on my selection criteria above and they've been ggod quality. General Books LLC however, is a publisher to steer clear of at all costs.

book - Mark Twain -
This is not what I thought it would be when I ordered it. No pictures. Since I got it free, I can't complain about the price.

BUMMER!!!! - LovesBooks -
I expected thoughts and drawings, but the Kindle version has no drawings and the entire format is ackward. I was hoping for something that would engage my imagination and entice my intellect, but not in this format. Skip the Kindle version.

Incomprehensible - Dr. Terry Wright -
A notebook without his drawings is like a belly with no intestines inside. Or maybe like a Mona Lisa with a frown instead. Huge disappointment. Complete, indeed!

The Goal: A Process of Ongoing Improvement Review

A lot of principles outlined in The Goal are accepted practice today. It espouses that constraints exist in any organization & that the focus on 'local optimums' is meaningless. From these, Goldratt goes about constructing (not fully however) how a constraint could be identified, elevated, and eventually resolved. While the book indicates that the goal of any organization is to make money, I would also submit that the book indirectly points out that the goal is to identify and resolve all constraints within an organization (manufacturing, HR, sales, marketing) so that the only constraint would be the market place.

A point to note is that this book was written over 25 years ago when 'accepted norms' in manufacturing in particular & organizations in general were much different. From that standpoint, this book is a pioneer.

At the end, you do wish there was more input on HOW one could resolve the constraints. But as Goldratt himself adds, he realized this and addressed them in his subsequent publications.

The Goal: A Process of Ongoing Improvement Overview

In this intriguing, readable business novel, which illustrates state-of-the-art economic theory, Alex Rogo is a UniCo plant manager whose factory and marriage are failing. To revitalize the plant, he follows piecemeal advice from an elusive former college professor who teaches, for example, that reduction in the efficiency of some plant operations may make the entire operation more productive. Alex's attempts to find the path to profitability and to engage his employeesi n the struggle involve the reader; and thankfully the authors' economic models, including a game with match sticks and bowls, are easy to understand. Although some characters are as anonymous as the goods manufactured in the factory, others ring true. In addition, the tender story of Alex and his wife's separation and reconciliation makes a touching contrast to the rest of the book. Recommended for anyone with an interest in the state of the American economy.

Captivating Business Story - Savannah Havarty -
This book was required for my Operations Management class, and to be honest, I wasn't looking forward to having to read it. However, once I started it, I couldn't put it down. I finished it in about three days, which is hard to do when you're a full time student with 6 other classes to prepare for. I'd highly recommend this book for anyone in business or managerial positions of any profession. Enjoy!

Algebra and Trigonometry Review

Although she isn't technically home schooled, I do tend to teach my little sister at home. She's quite intelligent, especially for a middle school student, so all that was needed was the right book for the job. This is that book.

I set out to teach my sister Geometry and Trigonometry, as she's about to enter High School. This book did the Trigonometry job superbly, and, not only is she putting her trig identities to good use, but she's finally uncovered another world in mathematics. Because of this book, I can actually begin to teach her Calculus, something that I was hoping to do but was going to put off for another year.

This book is the best book I can think of to teach yourself College Algebra and Trigonometry, and it is also a great book to transition from the world of Algebra to the world of Calculus.

Check Out Models for Writers: Short Essays for Composition

Models for Writers: Short Essays for Composition Review

I had to buy this book for my Expository Writing class in college. I took the class because I really enjoy writing but as an architecture major, we aren't encouraged to write much outside of essays on art history or theories of architecture. The book guides you through the basics styles and types of writing with fun and helpful example pieces. The author often selects multiple samples to illustrate how a theme like descriptive essay can take on different forms. I found this method to be very useful because it shows that there is more than just one "right" way to do things. It leaves room for creativity within clearly establishes guidelines. I not only learned a lot from this book but I also really enjoyed reading it. It was by far one of the favorite text books/hand books from college. I'd recommend it to anyone looking to dip their feet into writing.

Check Out Calculus of a Single Variable for $143.78

Calculus of a Single Variable Review

This book was the required text for my two semesters of calculus I had to slough through this past spring and summer. The first semester of calculus would be pretty rough for someone trying to learn it on your own because at times its the concepts that are a little challenging to understand rather than how to do the work. More than likely, some of the material can be confusing without the aid of a teacher or tutor but most chapters you can work independently through without any real problems at all (except the problems themselves, maybe). It will not really take you by the hand and show you all of the little algebra steps in the examples, however. That is YOUR own fault if you don't know what's going on. Do not be expected to be put in a stroller and wheeled around in the land of calculus when you should be walking tall with all the skills you acquired from algebra and trigonometry. As far as the writing goes, it is very well written to get across to most students what exactly you are trying to figure out with application problems included, the normal drill problems, and challenge problems (Putnam problems included). If you're good with algebra and trig, this whole first semester of calculus should be a cake walk for you in terms of difficulty. It is basically recalling all your old knowledge and applying them to new concepts involving basic differentiation and integration. This book I believe has aptly satisfied me with enough of a challenge as well as clarity in figuring out just what I need to know. For the students still having problems, they do have a solutions manual which got me through Calculus II like no other. Any time I was confused I would go through that book. A tip though is that if you're okay with it you should make annotations. I started doing that in calculus II because I was taking a summer course and imagine having to master the whole integration techniques chapter in 3 days. Was a nightmare. The solutions are usually well laid out and easy to follow but sometimes the steps you see there you can get stuck on if you don't know your algebra like second nature. I'd sit there and make notes on the little steps of what they did or would do to simplify their answers. It helps! Anyway, this book will get you through Calc I and Calc II is where this book really shines.

The Great Deluge: Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans, and the Mississippi Gulf Coast Review

I started reading this book after the BP well blowout in the Gulf. I lived in Gretna (across the river from NO) for four years and went to college in SE Louisiana. I was in Gretna when Camille hit, and remember what it did to Mississippi. I also remember the corruption in government, which continues, as reported daily by the Time Picayune (a real newspaper, which is a vanishing breed). The author does a very good job of showing how the endemic corruption and incompetence of local government contributed to this disaster - using the levees to make profits instead of hold back water, destruction of the wetlands, stupidity and gross negligence in preparing for a storm that everyone knew would come sooner or later.
I disagree with the reviewers who have said that the book focuses too much on the looting and violence. Yes, he covers it, but overall his focus is on the vast majority of decent people and how they were betrayed by the local, state and federal governments. And most of the victims of the violence were African American. I like it that he gave areas other than NO their due, including Mississippi and the other Louisiana parishes and towns that were neglected by the press at the time.
Finally, some reviewers have commented that the author is an outsider "cashing in" on the locals' tragedy. I believe he is a professor at Tulane, and last time I checked it was in NO.

The Great Deluge: Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans, and the Mississippi Gulf Coast Overview

In the span of five violent hours on August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina destroyed major Gulf Coast cities and flattened 150 miles of coastline. But it was only the first stage of a shocking triple tragedy. On the heels of one of the three strongest hurricanes ever to make landfall in the United States came the storm-surge flooding, which submerged a half-million homes—followed by the human tragedy of government mismanagement, which proved as cruel as the natural disaster itself.

In The Great Deluge, bestselling author Douglas Brinkley finds the true heroes of this unparalleled catastrophe, and lets the survivors tell their own stories, masterly allowing them to record the nightmare that was Katrina.

The Great Deluge: Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans, and the Mississippi Gulf Coast Specifications

Bestselling historian Douglas Brinkley, a professor at Tulane University, lived through the destruction of Hurricane Katrina with his fellow New Orleans residents, and now in The Great Deluge he has written one of the first complete accounts of that harrowing week, which sorts out the bewildering events of the storm and its aftermath, telling the stories of unsung heroes and incompetent officials alike. Get a sample of his story--and clarify your own memories--by looking through the detailed timeline he has put together of the preparation, the hurricane, and the response to one of the worst disasters in American history.

Great Story: the Great Deluge - H. Kalbach - Dunwoody, GA USA
This book is well prepared and well written. There is everything to know about hurricane Katrina -all the things you saw in the news and all the things you didn't. A significant documentary.

The Great Deluge - Margaret Sell -
I read this book five years after Katrina following a vacation in New Orleans. I was struck by how Katrina continues to be at the forefront of life there. After reading this detailed and harrowing account of the storm, I fully appreciate why their wounds are still so raw. The writer describes in a profoundly realistic manner the absolute horrors of the catastrophe, and the missed opportunites at every turn by local, state and federal leaders to if not avoid but to mitigate the tragedy. He also hails the folk who risked their lives to save their neighbors with a battlefield bravery that brought tears to my eyes. What a fabulous writer he is, and what a blessing to us that as one of New Orleans sons he bore witness to this event.

The Great Deluge by Douglas Brinkley - Sue in Mississippi - Petal,, Ms., US
I ordered this book because I survived Hurricane Katrina and I know first hand what it was like. This book just puts you there. It mostly talks about what happened in New Orleans....I was in Mississippi. I don't especially agree with the author's political views, but he did an excellent job in telling what it was like before, during, and after the most devastating event of my (and thousands of others)life.

However, Wednesday afternoon I received an email telling me that my order had been cancelled, with no information as to why the book wasn't being shipped. I was told that the order was still processing so i could not cancel and to call back five hours, which i knew was ridiculous. He did not even let me talk, and I was just told what to do. When i did call back i was told it was already in a box ready to ship. The second man who I spoke to was kind and knew how to do his job and was very helpful. Now I have to wait for it to arrive and then return it to the UPS store after.

Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace . . . One School at a Time Overview

The astonishing, uplifting story of a real-life Indiana Jones and his humanitarian campaign to use education to combat terrorism in the Taliban’s backyard

Anyone who despairs of the individual’s power to change lives has to read the story of Greg Mortenson, a homeless mountaineer who, following a 1993 climb of Pakistan’s treacherous K2, was inspired by a chance encounter with impoverished mountain villagers and promised to build them a school. Over the next decade he built fifty-five schools—especially for girls—that offer a balanced education in one of the most isolated and dangerous regions on earth. As it chronicles Mortenson’s quest, which has brought him into conflict with both enraged Islamists and uncomprehending Americans, Three Cups of Tea combines adventure with a celebration of the humanitarian spirit.

A completely inspiring book that is also a very, very good read - Sean O'Reilly - Washington Metro Area
One person can make a profound difference in the lives of other. Mortenson's nearest spiritual kin is Mother Theresa and all the unsung missionaries overseas who have improved countless lives through selfless action. Why Mortenson hasn't been awarded the Nobel Peace prize is beyond me. Not only is this a completely inspiring book, it is also a very good read.

unexpectedly great, read it in three days - hgptraveler - Stratford, CT United States
I expected to find the book to be heartwarming, inspiring and even interesting. What I didn't expect, was a story that was also entertaining to read. So many times I get stuck half way through a non fiction book because there's no plot to pull it along. This book held my attention and I read it over a 3 day weekend.

This book gives you understanding as to how politics and religion works in Afganistan and Packistan. It lets you know how the children are deprived of education and the escentials that we in this country take foregranted. It tells you about a person who is doing more for these people with very little in comparison to the Billions of dollars this country is wasting in that part of the world.

American Fairy Tales Review

This is a wonderful book for anyone with a taste for humorous fantasy. The stories are short and well written. There are no illustrations in this particular edition. Be aware of that, if you like the book enough, and consider finding a more robust printing to love and keep on a book shelf. Ultimately, though, any reader will find an extremely enjoyable read here.

American Fairy Tales Overview

No one intended to leave Martha alone that afternoon, but it happened that everyone was called away, for one reason or another. Mrs. McFarland was attending the weekly card party held by the Women's Anti-Gambling League. Sister Nell's young man had called quite unexpectedly to take her for a long drive. Papa was at the office, as usual. It was Mary Ann's day out. As for Emeline, she certainly should have stayed in the house and looked after the little girl; but Emeline had a restless nature. "Would you mind, miss, if I just crossed the alley to speak a word to Mrs. Carleton's girl?" she asked Martha. "'Course not," replied the child. "You'd better lock the back door, though, and take the key, for I shall be upstairs."

Great content - Kay Shelton -
I have only started reading this book on my Kindle. The stories are entertaining. I will read them to my grandkids. BUT I am disappointed that there is no Table of Contents. If they ask me to read a certain story, I will have to search the book for the title name. Would help so much to have a listing inn the Table of Contents.

Stories with a moral AND interesting illustrations - -
This book gives interesting stories with a moral at the end of each story and has illustrations on each page. The stories vary in length but can be read quickly due to the author's writing style. While different from "Oz" books, these stories are still a lot of fun.

This book is full of great stories for kids, ages 1-100 - -
This book, written by Lyman Frank Baum, author of The Wizard of Oz and many other Oz books is possibly his greatest work ever. Everyone should read this classic book of American fairy tales

Check Out Blue Ocean Strategy: How to Create Uncontested Market Space and Make Competition Irrelevant for $16.47

Blue Ocean Strategy: How to Create Uncontested Market Space and Make Competition Irrelevant Review

Kim and Mauborgne's approach to strategy is refreshing. Instead of measuring yourself against the competition, measure how much value you can create for your customers. The book is in three parts, first describing what is a "Blue Ocean Strategy", then how to define it for your business, and concluding with how to implement it. The second part of the book is what impressed me the most: the step-by-step process of zeroing in on what I call your "secret sauce", the specific elements of the value you bring to your clients that set you apart from everyone else. It is the best book that I've read so far that lays out a logical and demonstratable process to identify this. The authors provide many real-life examples to illustrate each aspect of the process. The third part of the book, on overcoming internal barriers to implementing the BOS in an organization, lays out the pitfalls that await a change leader, along with tactics to overcome them. I would have liked the examples to be a bit more varied for this third part.

Full of practical and real-life examples, the authors have convinced me of the power of this approach to business excellence. Now all I have to do is to get my colleagues and my clients to agree to the process, too...

This book was surprisingly quick for me to read despite the depth of the subject. Highly recommended both for startups and for existing SMEs who want to become the go-to provider in their field.

Blue Ocean Strategy: How to Create Uncontested Market Space and Make Competition Irrelevant Overview

Winning by Not Competing: A Fresh Approach to Strategy

Since the dawn of the industrial age, companies have engaged in head-to-head competition in search of sustained, profitable growth. They have fought for competitive advantage, battled over market share, and struggled for differentiation. Yet these hallmarks of competitive strategy are not the way to create profitable growth in the future.

In a book that challenges everything you thought you knew about the requirements for strategic success, W. Chan Kim and Renée Mauborgne argue that cutthroat competition results in nothing but a bloody red ocean of rivals fighting over a shrinking profit pool. Based on a study of 150 strategic moves spanning more than a hundred years and thirty industries, the authors argue that lasting success comes not from battling competitors, but from creating "blue oceans": untapped new market spaces ripe for growth. Such strategic moves-which the authors call "value innovation"- create powerful leaps in value that often render rivals obsolete for more than a decade.

Blue Ocean Strategy presents a systematic approach to making the competition irrelevant and outlines principles and tools any company can use to create and capture blue oceans. A landmark work that upends traditional thinking about strategy, this book charts a bold new path to winning the future.

W. Chan Kim is the Boston Consulting Group Bruce D. Henderson Chair Professor of Strategy and International Management at INSEAD. Renée Mauborgne is the INSEAD Distinguished Fellow and Professor of Strategy and Management.

StrengthsFinder 2.0: From the Author of the Bestseller Wellbeing Review

I've been looking for ways to stoke the fires of the "what will I be when I grow up" conversation for a long time; this book was my answer. Although it's not a guide to finding a career, it's great brain food for figuring out not only what you're good at, but what you instinctively like to do as a professional. We all have a tendency to focus heavily on our deficiencies, whether consciously or subconsciously, but this book flips that idea on it's head and forces us to confront what we actually do instinctively well. I've become a believer and a convert that our strengths are the most important thing we can understand and develop in our professional lives if we truly want to be happy and successful.

StrengthsFinder - Debbie -
This was the perfect solution to a team building exercise with my employees. In addition to individuals learning more about their own strengths, they learned a great deal about their fellow employees on the same team. We even took it one step further by having individuals guess 1-2 strengths of their coworkers to see if they knew their fellow teammates (this was done confidentially in the beginning, but as we shared strengths based on the computer output, team members revealed if they were correct in their guesses or not.)

It's all about strengths, but not sharing - Ryan McCallum - Buffalo, MN
The 2.0 in Web 2.0 is more synonymous with "ease of sharing" than it is with "improved". Unfortunately, ease of sharing is the main drawback of Tom Rath's Strengths Finder 2.0, a powerful personal discovery tool that is hindered by the lack of a desperately needed social element.

The Good: In-depth analysis of personal strengths
Rath strives to equip readers with a detailed analysis of their strengths and how to maximize them. The results are incredibly deep and thorough and readers won't be disappointed with the analysis, even though other free inventories provide similar results. The first 40 pages of the book explain the importance of understanding and maximizing individual strengths rather than discovering and improving weaknesses. Rath justifies this with a simple formula.

Talent * Investment = Strength

Rath imagines that a person has a score of 1-5 in the areas of Talent and Investment. He says that a person with a lot of talent (5) but little investment in those talents (2) receives the same 10 score as a person with not much talent (2) but a lot of investment (5). Neither of these stories, according to Rath, are examples of a good way to maximize strengths. On the other hand, Rath argues that people should focus on the talents they score a perfect 5 on and work to invest as much as they can. Hence, Rudy scores a 10 in football and Joe Montana scores a perfect 25. We find a lot of inspiration in Rudy's story, but his extensive investment in football was probably a waste of time. If he would have invested more of himself in an area of natural talent, he could have had a bigger impact and a more satisfying life.

After using an access code sealed in the back of the book to unlock a 35-minute inventory, readers receive a deep examination of their top five strengths out of 35 possible areas. If a reader wants to get a further analysis or find out how they ranked on all 35 areas, they must pay 0 for a personal consultation.

I cannot imagine the 0 being a wise investment for anyone or any group, and it makes the book and inventory seem like hook instead of a stand-alone tool. However, reading the results is enjoyable and satisfying. There's much to be gained and the results seem personalized and accurate. At it's core, Strengths Finder 2.0 is really a book about you and finding simple ways to make yourself more happy at home and work. Rath succeeds at this in a number of ways and makes the book quite a satisfying personal reflective experience.

The Bad: 2.0 should mean sharing.
While the book and the Strengths Finder test that comes with it are insightful and based on over a decade of research on 10 million people by Gallop, the access code that comes from the book only allows one person to take the test one time. The results are made to be shared with others, but learning about someone else is not as interesting when others can't take the test as well. Very few people in my life are fascinating enough for me to invest 30 minutes of reading about them without wanting to see how I compare to their results. My first reaction upon taking the test was to see how my wife would score; however, if I wanted to see her results, I'd have to buy another copy of the book. Since I didn't want to invest that, I decided not to even mention the results to her. I understand that the test is the book's big hook, but it leaves the feeling of taking the test a little empty when results can't be shared without a caveat. This was the same weakness of the online test included with The Survivor's Club. The impact of books like these (as well as the sales numbers) would be increased if the tests allowed one or two extra people to share in the results.

Over 3/4 of the book is analysis of the different strength types, so without the ability to share results easily with those who are close to you, the book is pretty empty.

Application
This book is a good choice for a Professional Learning Committee or a small professional group to use as a discussion starter. I am fortunate enough to be using it in this way with a small group of colleagues. My boss is using this as a way to begin a discussion with a group of us in order for us to make work a more supportive, enjoyable place. This type of sharing of results is essential and appreciated. It makes the experience of the book more complete and the majority of the book seems useful this way. If the group of us are supportive of each other's strengths - while keeping in mind that we aren't defining ourselves as only proficient in five areas - it could lead to a better workplace environment, more motivation, and more happiness.

On the other hand, although the results of the inventory are intended to be deep, there could be a risk of pigeonholing people as one dimensional. For example, when looking at my results, I was a little disappointed to see that - although they resonated with me - they felt quite similar to each other. I apparently like learning new things and want to always learn more, I like ideas, I'm good at expressing my ideas with big words, I use knowledge to find patterns, and I value all people. This doesn't seem like an especially rich portrait of myself - so I would worry that co-workers would disregard how much I like making things happen and actually applying what I learn. I don't want my potential for leadership discounted by five strengths. Any group using this book should use it as a way to foster stronger awareness of the differences and strengths of everyone in an environment without discounting things that are not specifically mentioned in the top five formula.

Other personality inventories could be equally valid and should be used in conjunction with this tool in a PLC environment to continue the spirit of learning about others and appreciating differences.

Meat - Jack -
This book is not very meaty, but because of the great price at Amazon, it's a good way to buy the voucher for the test, and then the book is sort of a guide to that test. If you discuss it with others, you can also read up on their strengths in this book. I found the test to be very enlightening, and helps me understand myself.

Calculus Review

This book is totally sufficient. I've read a couple reviews that say stuff like 'needs adequate examples to cover problems people will potentially be seeing in the problem sections...'
I had this book in college & I'm a workaholic. If you assign me 10 homework problems, I'll do 50 & then I'll do them again to make sure I really understood them.
There were very few times where there was a problem that couldn't be done. I'm not a 'brain' and the only reason I get good grades in math is due to work ethic, not special talent. If you do the problems in order, you shouldn't have a problem with understanding the questions. The sections are designed to step your level up as you're going through the problems. The theory questions may throw you but thats normal & there are too few of those to trip you up any way. This book isn't for the theory, its for Calc I, Calc II or Calc III which has very little theory in the syllabus. There's a seperate course for theory & it will give you its own headaches b/c when you have questions about why things were proved in certain ways, your teacher will have no clue but they still try to give a BS answer to trick you into thinking they do (they restate the definition/proof the way gradeschooler rewrites an Encyclopedia page for a report. They don't realize that students would respect them more if they just say 'I really don't know but if you understand the proof for what it is rather than how it came to be, you'll get through the section fine.' Which is how honest one of my teachers was at the beginning of a class I had in theory.).

Kindle Version: Not Ready for Prime Time! - Bruce K. Vines - Florissant, MO, US
I bought the Kindle version of this book because I need a calculus reference to take with me and I don't want to carry another really big book. I have to say that having a text like this in my Kindle is a wonderful thing. I've seen some negative comments about the material in this book. Frankly, I find it to be a very understandable text. I like the author's presentation. So why one star? The formatting of the Kindle version. Wow! I'm reading through the first chapter and there are literally dozens of places where you have a variable name, such as x or y, that is joined to the next word (ex: For the function fdefined...are used instead of x.To evaluate...function was fi rst, etc) On one page the word "nonverticallines" appears twice. Here's one: "...are equivalent because Ll=0." There's no "Ll" anywhere else on the page. What this should have been was delta-x = 0. There are run-together's, misspellings, things left out, incorrect symbols...Again, that's only the first chapter. It's a shame to pay 9.00 and get a mess like this. This one's not ready for prime time.

Liar's Poker: Rising Through the Wreckage on Wall Street Review

This book is an excellent look at the culture of the 1980's investment bank, primarily, the now non-existent, Salomon Brothers. This book takes the reader through the training program at SB with the author Lewis. Liar's Poker does a great job describing the characters in this investment house as well as the insanity that occurs on a daily basis at the trading desks and the woeful decisions by the CEO's of these banks.

The look at SB was hilarious in its time, but now it is an excellent view of the creation of the Mortgage Backed Security and the large market of home loans that was created. This gives the reader a firsthand view of events that would eventually lead to the credit crisis of 2007-2009.

In standard Lewis fashion the reader is given an easy to understand explanation of complicated financial transaction and markets, even the unsophisticated person can read this book and understand the happenings of the markets.

I recommend this book; it is a great way to become familiar with Wall st and its interworkings.

Liar's Poker: Rising Through the Wreckage on Wall Street Overview

In fiction there was Bonfire of the Vanities; in reality, there is Liar's Poker--the fascinating insider's account of what really happens on Wall Street. This irreverent and hilarious birds-eye view of Wall Street's heyday will appeal to anyone intrigued by the allure of million dollar deals. Now in trade paper. First serial to Manhattan Inc.

Great bookLiar's Poker. It teaches a lot about the bond market, how the market works, and what bonds are all about. The book talks about market fools, and how the pros in the bond and equity markets make money off the market fools. Until I read this book, I didn't realize that I'm a market fool. This book has changed the way that I look at investing.

Abridged Audio CD Too Short, Author Doesn't Read It Well - A Tough Critic - California
I don't like buying abridged editions, and only did so here because I didn't see an unabridged CD of this book. This one proves why: too short and choppy, and you can tell that much is being left out. In addition, while the stories are interesting, the author's voice is quite incompatible with the material he's reading, and therefore a distraction. (If you want to hear the perfect Audio CD, try the unabridged Angela's Ashes, read by its author Frank McCourt ... pure magic. I'd venture to say you cannot truly understand from any other format what this incredible storyteller is trying to convey. You'll want to start it over as soon as it ends.)

Great read - Colin@NYUpoly -
This book had me after the first chapter, which left me with the hair on the back of my neck tingling with excitement. Michael Lewis is a great story teller and since he was on ground zero for Salomon brothers during their early years it gives him a massive amount of insight. This book is hilarious to read because it documents the mortgage trading culture wonderfully during its infancy...and explains how salomon bros sowed the seeds of it's own destruction early on with poor business practices while simultaneously creating the dangerous market of mortgages and derivatives. Excellent to read, complex but in layman's terms, and most importantly it is organized like a good novel: complete with beginning, middle, and end. I highly recommend this book for not only its informational value, but for its entertainment value as well.

Check Out Sidelights on Relativity (Illustrated Edition) for $6.45

Sidelights on Relativity (Illustrated Edition) Review

This 56-page Dover edition offers two lectures by Albert Einstein, "Ether and the Theory of Relativity" and "Geometry and Experience". The lectures are described as "devoid of complicated equations and abstruse terminology". Nonetheless, while the reader does benefit from Einstein's clarity of thought, these lectures do require careful attention. The first lecture presumes familiarity with physics; the second is largely a discussion of non-Euclidian geometry and is easier reading.

Ether and the Theory of Relativity, an address delivered on May 5, 1920 at University of Leyden:

Einstein recounts how the concept of ether originated and subsequently evolved. After some discussion of work by Hertz, Maxwell, Lorentz, and Mach, he notes that it became possible to take a position that ether does not exist. However, using an analogy of water waves, he explains that although the special theory of relativity does forbid us to assume ether consists of particles observable through time, the hypothesis of ether in itself is not in conflict with the special theory of relativity. Only we must give up ascribing a motion to it.

While it may seem superfluous to postulate a homogeneous, isotropic, ether-medium, Einstein contends that to deny the ether is ultimately to assume that empty space has no physical qualities at all. He then argues that according to his General Theory of Relativity "empty space" in its physical relation is neither homogeneous nor isotropic, compelling us to describe its state by ten functions (the gravitational potentials). There can be no space or part of space without gravitational potentials.

After noting that elementary particles may be considered condensations of electromagnetic fields, he concludes that our current view of the universe presents two realties which are completely separated from each other conceptually, although connected casually, namely gravitational ether and electromagnetic field, or as they might be called, space and matter.

Geometry and Experience - an expanded form of an address to the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin on January 27, 1921:

Einstein begins by posing and answering why mathematics, a product of human thought, is so admirably appropriate to describing reality. In exploring limitations associated with applying Euclidian geometry to relations between rigid bodies, Einstein introduces other axiomatic systems, including Riemann's geometry. He argues that there are difficulties in applying geometry on the sub-molecular level, but it is less problematical to extend the ideas of geometry to cosmic orders of magnitude.

After some clarification of the meaning of a finite universe and an infinite universe, he devotes several pages to illustrating how to visualize a finite, three dimensional universe that is unbounded. Einstein concludes this lecture with an enthusiastic comment: "My only aim today has to show that the human faculty of visualization is by no means bound to capitulate to non-Euclidian geometry."

Amazing clarity - Howard Dolinsky - LA, CA
Clear and important essay on the relationship between geometry and physics and our prejudices about it. Similar essay on the history of the ether and how it evolved to fit data. An unmatched depth of understanding presented succinctly and clearly. Good read for both those with passing understanding of relativity and those with deeper understanding who want to see Einstein's clear thinking on paper.

Experience vs Hypothesis - rareoopdvds - San Diego, CA United States
This is the first book of I have read in which Einstein wrote directly rather than the many reiterations of his works. Sidelights on Relativity is a two part book of lectures in which he gave in 1920 and 1921. The first titled "Ether and the Theory of Relativity." Einstein explores the concepts given by Newton, Maxwell and Lorentz of the ether arguing the universe is not mechanical in nature. The other argument is the purely physical aspect in which the mechanical perspective seems to propose what is seen is that exists, and/or can be measured and proven to exist. That "space without ether is unthinkable," that is, the effects of spce/time gives credence to ethers existence just as "the undulatory surface forming the boundary between water and air alters the course of time." This, then, creates the contradiction. The second lecture is titled "Geometry and Experience" in which Einstein argues Euclidean geometry by noting the difference of experiencing and proposing laws of earth-measurement. He demonstrates this through the plane and the globe asking the reader to imagine the globe and a plane. While the plane is infinite in all directions, similarly one can fill the plane up infinately. This is not an all together accurate picture of our universe. Rather if we imagine a sphere and fill that up, we realize only a finite amount can fill up the space.

At this point, I will say that my understanding stands at a finite point in which it would be only arrogant for me to claim I understood the entirety of the book. Nonetheless, I found this book completely readable, mostly due to the fact that there are no formulas to follow. My knowledge of relativity is limited and I have given you what I believe I understand. Its a short book with the writing clear and concise and logical; which surprised me hearing stories about Einsteins genius in which he is unable to explain in laymans terms. Highly reccomended!

Great text and an easy read, but not for advanced chem students. I bought it for a bio-chem class at University of Kentucky, and was super-pleased with my purchase. My only reason for 4-stars is the examples provided for in-text reference will never be used on a chem test, simply because they're too easy. Yes, easy probs should be included in order to build foundational skills, but, this book stops there. The text is great though, and superbly easy to pick up on. Also, like most textbooks, only odd answers to chapter reviews are included in the back of the book. C'mon people,it's frigin ridiculous to attempt to solve problems you have no answer for reference. All textbooks need all answers. And don't give me that bull-crap that you can cheat out of the back. Hardly have I ever received homework assignments from chapter summaries. In my experience, it's lecture, study your book, then take a test. All answers would for surely help in that regard.

Study Guide for Chemistry: A Molecular Approach Overview

For two-semester or three-quarter courses in General Chemistry.

The author’s goal in writing this book is to deliver the depth of coverage faculty want with the accessibility and clarity that students need for success.  Nivaldo J. Tro’s Chemistry: A Molecular Approach explains difficult chemical concepts in a concise and clear student-centered manner while also providing faculty with the flexibility to go more deeply into many key, often neglected topics, such as electron diffraction, molecular orbital theory, and free-energy changes under non-standard conditions.  Chemistry is presented visually throughmulti-level images (macroscopic, molecular and symbolic representations), which helps students see the connections among the formulas (symbolic), the world around them (macroscopic), and the atoms and molecules that make up the world (molecular).  Every aspect of this book focuses students on recognizing that the behavior of matter is based on the behavior of atoms and molecules.

Great Chemistry Textbook!! - Nancy Bedrosian - Floresville, TX
This textbook is FANTASTIC! My favorite feature in this textbook are the examples. Each example is written step by step with instructions on one side, with the problem worked out next to it. After each example is a practice problem which enables the student to reinforce the new techniques using a similar problem. I had a very enthusiastic professor for Chemistry, who had difficulty communicating the subject as English was not her primary language....this being said, this textbook made it easy for me to get an "A" in the course, and also served as a good foundation for my future Chemistry courses. Honestly, a student could easily learn Chemistry from this textbook with little or no assistance from their instructor!!

Way overpriced! - CocoBeware - USA
Better than most Chemistry books but the price tag is ridiculous. The inforamtion contained in an intro Chemistry book hasn't changed much over the last few decades. So, why is it necessary to put a new edition out every year that is more than the previous? (Besides the money making aspect.) Good book but if you don't need this particular book, just get an older one for ten bucks and eek your way through the semester.

Calculus (Stewart's Calculus Series) Review

Admittedly, I've never used another calculus textbook, but I generally found this one to be good enough that I could learn from it. I have read the chapters before and after class and generally found the book to helpful in my understanding of the subject material. Having said that, I like math and have a very strong base in algebra, so the examples never really left me wondering (as so many people have complained about). It's not magic he's using to solve problems, it's algebra. Stewart skips steps in his example problems because the steps he's skipping are algebraic in nature and therefore shouldn't require further explanation (it would be tedious and long if he showed ALL of his steps). Examples are clearly labeled so I'm not sure what the confusion concerning that is all about. I've also never seen a problem in the back of the book be incorrect as many have complained about.

All in all, I give it four, but not five, stars because it was what I expected and needed out of a textbook, but I've never had any experience with other texts. I should also add that I had a wonderful teacher and only needed the book as a supplement.

College Calculus - Mark Page -
It's not a good book. Not very good at explaining topics and concepts. Some of the problems are taught in the lessons.

Kindle DX version review - Andrew Reviewer - Palo Alto, CA
This is NOT a review of quality of writing of the paper version.

This is a review of this book on Kindle DX, and there are two bad things about it.

1. Graphics look awful. Pixelated, blurry and with no contrast. I have last-gen Kindle DX and I'm not sure how graphics look on the regular Kindle. Maybe they were optimized for smaller Kindle, but on my DX they're blurry and awful. It's not an issue with Kindle screen, because the book text is crispy and nice. It's an issue with how they "optimized" graphics. It's also not an issue with Kindle graphics. I perfectly read other math books (see below) with graphics on the Kindle. It's just an issue with this particular book. Take in mind that these blurry images make about 25% of the content (in terms of screen space) and are essential part of the text.

2. Price is even worse. I can rent this book for free in a local library. I can rent it at chegg for for a semester. I can buy a paper version and sell a used book for about the same loss (). The Kindle version which you can't resell costs 0. Is that how Jeff Bezos wants to promote Kindle device to mass?

And then somebody in the publisher will sit and think. "I knew that this whole Kindle thing was a fluke. We sell nothing on Kindle and tons of paperback". Well, dear publishers, that's because you are trying to sell a product of worse quality (see point about graphics) at a higher price (see the point about reselling the used version or renting it). It's not how you typically generate new business opportunities.

It's not a Kindle problem. Jim Hefferon's free pdf book on Linear Alegbra ([...]) reads perfectly on Kindle DX. It's a problem with Amazon's under-commitment to textbooks and publishers' under-commitment to making money on ereaders.
